The Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking invites submissions the 2012 AILACT Essay Prize.  Value: $300 U.S. The prize-winning paper will be published in Informal Logic, contingent upon meeting the conditions specified in the prize’s notice, available at http://ailact.mcmaster.ca/. Papers related to the teaching or theory of informal logic or critical thinking, and papers on argumentation theory, will be considered for the prize. Authors need not be members of AILACT. Previously unpublished papers, and papers published or accepted for publication between January 1, 2009 and October 31, 2012, are eligible.  Maximum length: 6,000 words. CFP: Logic, Algebra and Truth Degrees 2012

The third meeting in the series Logic, Algebra and Truth Degrees will be held on 10-14 September 2012 in Kanazawa, Japan. Former meetings in this series have been in Siena, 2008 and Prague, 2010. The conference is organized by Research Center for Integrated Science, of the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, in cooperation with the EUSFLAT Working Group on Mathematical Fuzzy Logic.

Mathematical Fuzzy Logic is a subdiscipline of Mathematical Logic which studies the notion of comparative truth. The assumption that “truth comes in degrees” has proved to be very useful in many, both theoretical and applied, areas of Mathematics, Computer Science and Philosophy. The main goal of this meeting is to foster collaboration between researchers in the area of Mathematical Fuzzy Logic, and to promote communication and cooperation with members of neighbouring fields. The featured topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
•    Proof systems for fuzzy logics: Hilbert, Gentzen, natural deduction, tableaux, resolution, computational complexity, etc.
•    Algebraic semantics: residuated lattices, MTL-algebras, BL-algebras, MV-algebras, Abstract Algebraic Logic, functional representation, etc.
•    Game-theory: Giles games, Rényi-Ulam games, evaluation games, etc.
•    First-order fuzzy logics: axiomatizations, arithmetical hierarchy, model theory, etc.
•    Higher-order fuzzy logical systems: type theories, Fuzzy Class Theory, and formal fuzzy mathematics.
•    Philosophical issues: connections with vagueness and uncertainty.
•    Applied fuzzy logical calculi: foundations of logical programming, logic-based reasoning about similarity, description logics, etc.

We also welcome contributions on any relevant aspects of related logical systems (such as substructural and quantum logics, and many-valued logics in general).
The conference scientific programme will include one tutorial, five invited lectures and contributed talks. Researchers whose interests fit in the general aims of the conference are encouraged to participate.

Abstracts due May 15, 2012
Full papers due September 1, 2012.

Topics include but are not limited to computationally-oriented treatments of:

  • Theories of argumentation for health system design,
  • Persuasion for health-behavior change or health management,
  • Negotiation with patients about treatment regimens,
  • Lay-oriented justification of diagnosis or proposed medical interventions,
  • Effective risk communication and meeting other patient education needs via argumentation,
  • Argument source attributes, e.g., establishing credibility and trust,
  • Argument medium attributes, e.g., engagement and immediacy through interaction with conversational agents or multimodal systems,
  • User modeling, i.e., leveraging computational models of the message recipient’s (initial or evolving) attitudes for content selection and presentation design,
  • Assistance for consumers in finding and evaluating evidence, possibly conflicting, in the medical literature or with respect to direct-to-consumer medical advertisements,

First Announcement and Call for Papers

Symposium “Influencing People with Information”
University of Aberdeen, Wednesday 25 April 2012.
How can a web site help you decide how best to travel? Can a computer explain your patient record to you? Does instant feedback on petrol use change how people drive? This symposium will ask how information can influence people, and how the manner in which the information is presented can make a difference. It will bring together researchers working on natural language generation, information presentation, behaviour change, argumentation and decision support.
For the last 5 years, researchers at the University of Aberdeen have investigated how information expressed in natural language can affect a recipient in terms of his/her knowledge, actions and emotions. Now, a Symposium supported by the Scottish Computer Science and Informatics Alliance (SICSA) will widen the focus from language, addressing a range of research questions about the ways in which information, and the presentation of information, can influence people. The aim of the symposium is to hear a range of views on this topic, including both established and young (e.g., PhD student) researchers, and to explore ideas for future research and funding in this mutidisciplinary area. The symposium aims to cover empirical as well as computational work (e.g., including experimental psychology).

We solicit submission of 500-1000-word abstracts in pdf format. Submissions should be submitted using Easychair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sipi2012

2012 European Epistemology Network Meeting

The European Epistemology Network provides a platform for cooperation and exchange among epistemologists and those interested in the theory of knowledge in Europe.

The 2012 meeting will be organized by the Universities of Bologna and Modena and Reggio Emilia and by COGITO Research Centre in Philosophy. It will be held in Bologna and Modena, Italy from Thursday 28th to Saturday 30th of June.

NCA Call for Proposals

Request for Proposals

The National Communication Association requests proposals for projects and events that will advance the discipline of communication. While there are many funding outlets for communication scholars to seek support for academic disciplinary research, NCA is uniquely positioned to support work that is focused on the discipline itself.  All funded activities should align with the goals of NCA’s strategic plan and should have widespread impact that reaches beyond a single department, campus, or NCA unit.  For information about projects and events that have been funded by NCA in the past, please click here.

Funding proposals submitted through this request for proposals should be for one-time funding not to exceed $5,000.[1]  Preference is given to stand-alone projects/events, but partial funding of larger projects/events will be considered provided that the funding is allocated to a specific piece of the larger endeavor.

INTRODUCTION

Formal models of theoretical rationality have seen major recent changes. The consequences for practical rationality have yet to be worked out. Over the past three years a network of experts has held a series of targeted research meetings to address this question.

In this final meeting, we aim to look ahead in time, and beyond the frontiers of research on formal philosophical approaches to reasoning and decision making. We have five guests: Branden Fitelson, Jeff Helzner, Simon Hutegger, Katya Tentori, and Kevin Zollman. There will also be presentations by many of the network participants listed below.

 

R&D RESEARCH NETWORK

The research network for rationality and decision is led by Jan-Willem Romeijn and Olivier Roy. Members are: Johan van Benthem, Luc Bovens, Richard Bradley, Jacob Chandler, Michael Cozic, Franz Dietrich, Richard Dietz, Igor Douven, Stephan Hartmann, Martin van Hees, Brian Hill, Barteld Kooi, Hannes Leitgeb, Christian List, Eric Pacuit, Jeanne Peijnenburg, Wlodek Rabinowicz, Sonja Smets, Kai Spiekermann, Jan Sprenger, Katie Steele, Annika Wallin, and Jon Williamson.

Over the past years we have extended the network with a number of people: Alexandru Baltag, Seamus Bradley, Mareile Drechsler, Catarina Dutilh-Novaes, Patryk Dziurosz-Serafinowicz, Conrad Heilmann, Ronnie Hermens, Soroush Raffee Rad, and Rory Smead.

 

CALL FOR PAPERS

We invite submissions for a limited number of contributed talks. Please send an anonymized abstract of 1000 words to RatDec2012@rug.nl by April 15. The programme committee consists of the members of the research network. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by May 15 at the latest.
