The Communication University of China (CUC) and the U.S.-based National Communication Association (NCA) are pleased to announce a co-sponsored summer conference to be held in Beijing, China, June 17-19, 2016. The conference will be held at the CUC International Convention Center, creating public space for scholars, media practitioners, government officials, and students to participate in open discussions and dialogue. Presentations will be made in English and Chinese, with simultaneous translations available via headsets.
China and the United States are positioned to influence notions of democracy, nationalism, citizenship, human rights, environmental priorities, and public health for the foreseeable future.
This international conference will address these broad issues as questions about communication; about how our two nations envision each other and how our interlinked imaginaries create both opportunities and obstacles for greater understanding and strengthened relations. Within the overarching theme of “Communication, Media, and Governance in the Age of Globalization,” the conference will address eight key topics, each to be explored in panel sessions, workshops,graduate student panel sessions, and poster sessions.

The University of Iowa’s Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a full time, tenure-track faculty position in rhetorical studies at the rank of assistant professor. We seek a scholar-teacher with demonstrated theoretical fluency and a research record in contemporary rhetorical criticism, rhetorical theory, and/or critical histories of rhetoric. The ideal candidate’s research and teaching program will be concerned with civic engagement and the ways in which individuals and groups use rhetorical strategies to engage public controversies at the local, national, and/or global level. Possible areas could include (but are not limited to): civic engagement, environmental rhetoric, gender and sexuality, health and technology, political communication, race and ethnicity, social justice, and transnational rhetorics. Candidates will build on existing strengths among Communication Studies faculty in the areas of health, technology and/or social change.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a related discipline in hand by August 15th, 2016. A strong record, or promise of, outstanding teaching and scholarship and evidence of a demonstrated or potential ability to mentor graduate students are required qualifications for this position. The ability to collaborate across specializations in the Department and with other disciplines is desirable.

The Department of Communication in the College of Media, Communication and Information at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a non-tenure-track, 3-year renewable appointment as instructor, with expertise in the following areas: public debate, deliberation, and dialogue. The position includes teaching two courses a semester (50%) in areas related to this specialization as well as the development and administration of a program in deliberation, dialogue, and noncompetitive public debate (50%) that will serve the interests of undergraduates at CU generally but especially in the newly formed College of Media, Communication and Information. The person hired into this position will be instrumental in giving the new program a distinctive shape and mission and will be responsible for program administration including overseeing relevant graduate student appointments. The program is expected to cultivate skills in, and support the practice of, deliberation, dialogue, argumentation, and debate in co-curricular sites such as the College’s Communication and Society Residential Academic Program, and with student organizations like the Multiethnic Media Organization or the Association for Women in Communications. The Program may also plan and/or partner with other campus organizations to design and conduct events that involve debate, deliberation, dialogue, and other modes of public communication.

The Practice/s of Giving Reasons: a special issue of Topoi

The re-discovery, in the late 1970’s, of the perspectives on argument as process and practice (added to that of product) occasioned a dramatic re-visioning of the object of study in argumentation. Viewed as a practice of transacting reasons, argumentation became a situated activity, or doing, requiring know-how, rather than a collection of reasons – a thing containing a collection of knowledge-that.
This volume focuses on the normative and epistemic dimensions and consequences of viewing argumentation as the practice/s of transacting (giving and asking for) reasons. We mean to create momentum behind the perspectives focused primarily on the actions and doings which, alongside many related human practices, constitute argumentation. Here we open a space to explore and interrogate the idea that neither argumentation as a whole, nor the many elements into which it may be analyzed, can be adequately understood apart from an account of what it is to give reasons, with all the complexity and fluidity that attends our engagement in any kind of know-how. Rather, the practice/s of transacting reasons is central to the projects of explaining what a reason is, how reasons work, the normativity of reasons, as well as their prescriptivity (or our accountability to them).
