The MSc Logic, offered by the the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam, is a two-year Master’s programme providing intensive interdisciplinary research training for excellent students with a first degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Linguistics, or a related discipline.

2 SNF doctoral studentships
In linguistics – cognitive sciences – discourse analysis
Applications are invited for two SNF doctoral students (100%). Candidates will be working on their PhD within the SNF research project “Biased Communication: The Cognitive Pragmatics of Fallacies”. The project is closely connected to the activities and doctoral tuition offered by the CRUS doctoral programme ‘Language & Cognition’ based at the University of Fribourg and the Cognitive Sciences Centre based at the University of Neuchâtel, in Switzerland. Both PhDs will be jointly registered at both institutions (co-tutelle).

video, the page has an extended and lightly edited transcript of Sperber’s short talk that makes it very easy to see the differences between Sperber’s theory of mind and communication, that of Dawkins’, and what are, for some in argumentation theory, perhaps the more familiar semiological approaches. The video will also be of interest to those working on these topics from philosophical starting points.
If often find myself wishing that there were more discussion about these issues in argumentation theory and informal logic than there often seems to be. Perhaps Sperber’s work, including not just his talk here but last year’s release of Meaning and Relevance (an extension of the classic Relevance, also co-written with Deirdre Wilson), and the argument theory of reasoning he and Hugo Mercier have developed, will be just the stimulus we need to see our investigations afresh.

The organizers wish to announce the 12th Annual Conference on Rhetoric «Giornate Tridentine di Retorica 12 – GTR 2012», as the First International Workshop on «Argumentation & Rhetoric (in Public Discourse, in Language, in Law)».
The Workshop, sponsored by CERMEG (Research Centre on Legal Methodology), will be held 7-8 June 2012 at the University of Trento, Faculty of Law, Italy.
The Workshop provides an opportunity for researchers and doctoral students to discuss current issues in the field of argumentation and rhetoric. (more…)

This lovely little RSA animation featuring linguist Sephen Pinker should be interesting for theorists of argument on multiple levels. Such explanations as Pinker’s bear directly on how we take on enthymemes, how we think about dialectical guidelines, how we think about the practice of argumentation in general, etc. I could go on, but instead I’ll let the charming video do the work*:
