The Department of Philosophy at York University invites applications from scholars who specialize in the field of Social Epistemology and Cognitive Science to be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC). The successful CRC is expected to have the necessary qualifications to be appointed as a tenured or tenure-track professor at the Assistant or Associate level. We are interested in applicants who demonstrate the potential for major and transformative scholarship in the field of social epistemology, drawing connections with cognitive science and/or other empirically informed approaches to philosophy.

The University of Dundee’s School of Science & Engineering is advertising several permanent posts including one covering the Centre for Argument Technology. We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates in Computational Linguistics to expand the group’s research in Argument Mining (see argmining2016.arg.tech and arg.tech/am), but welcome applications in all areas of the overlap between argumentation and artificial intelligence. Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Computational Linguistics

Grade 7 (£30,434 – £37,394)

Fixed Term 36 months

Applications are invited for a research assistant to work on an EPSRC-funded project in computational linguistics and argumentation. The Argument Mining project aims to develop a range of techniques in computational linguistics to exploit theories of argument structure and classical rhetoric in order to automatically identify human reasoning in unconstrained natural language texts. The project involves two commercial partners: one a local tech company, the other, IBM and the Watson team in particular.

The Institute of Argumentation, Linguistics and Semiotics
at the Università della Svizzera italiana invites applications for a position of PhD /teaching assistant in argumentation.

The candidate will be involved in a research stream on argumentation as an alternative to conflict within
institutions. In particular, his /her PhD dissertation will consider informal practices of mediation in public organizations in Switzerland; and analyse them from a discourse analytical and argumentative perspective (including, but not limited to, framing and reframing strategies, issue management, argument schemes, etc.).

The Department of Communication in the College of Media, Communication and Information at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a non-tenure-track, 3-year renewable appointment as instructor, with expertise in the following areas: public debate, deliberation, and dialogue. The position includes teaching two courses a semester (50%) in areas related to this specialization as well as the development and administration of a program in deliberation, dialogue, and noncompetitive public debate (50%) that will serve the interests of undergraduates at CU generally but especially in the newly formed College of Media, Communication and Information. The person hired into this position will be instrumental in giving the new program a distinctive shape and mission and will be responsible for program administration including overseeing relevant graduate student appointments. The program is expected to cultivate skills in, and support the practice of, deliberation, dialogue, argumentation, and debate in co-curricular sites such as the College’s Communication and Society Residential Academic Program, and with student organizations like the Multiethnic Media Organization or the Association for Women in Communications. The Program may also plan and/or partner with other campus organizations to design and conduct events that involve debate, deliberation, dialogue, and other modes of public communication.

The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for two (2) Alternate Stream (teaching focused) tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Lecturer to begin July 1, 2014. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidates must be able to provide documented evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level and demonstrate commitment to pedagogy with the potential for programmatic leadership. The area of specialization is open and areas of competence are logic and critical thinking. A PhD in Philosophy is required. The successful candidates will be expected to teach multiple sections of the Department’s general education course, Modes of Reasoning, each year along with one or more undergraduate philosophy courses, depending on departmental need.
