Job Announcement: Two Positions at York University, AOC in Critical Thinking

The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for two (2) Alternate Stream (teaching focused) tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Lecturer to begin July 1, 2014. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidates must be able to provide documented evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level and demonstrate commitment to pedagogy with the potential for programmatic leadership. The area of specialization is open and areas of competence are logic and critical thinking. A PhD in Philosophy is required. The successful candidates will be expected to teach multiple sections of the Department’s general education course, Modes of Reasoning, each year along with one or more undergraduate philosophy courses, depending on departmental need. Submissions are invited for the Eleventh International Workshop on Argumentation in Multi-Agent Systems (ArgMAS 2014), to be held in Paris, France, as part of AAMAS 2014.

For ArgMAS 2014, papers are solicited on the concepts, theories, methodologies, and applications of computational models of argument in creating autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. Argumentation can be abstractly defined as the formal interaction of different arguments for and against some conclusion (e.g., a proposition, an action intention, a preference, etc). A single agent may use argumentation techniques to perform individual reasoning, to resolve conflicting
evidence, or to decide between conflicting goals.   Multiple agents may also use dialectical argumentation in order to identify and reconcile differences between themselves, through interactions such as negotiation, persuasion, and joint deliberation.

The main goal of ArgMAS 2014 will be to bring together the community of researchers working on argumentation in multi-agent systems. The workshop has the following technical goals: Continue Reading »

Applications are invited for two SNF doctoral students (100%). Candidates will be working on their PhD within the SNF research project “Biased Communication: The Cognitive Pragmatics of Fallacies”. The project is closely connected to the activities and doctoral tuition offered by the CRUS doctoral programme ‘Language & Cognition’ based at the University of Fribourg and the Cognitive Sciences Centre based at the University of Neuchâtel, in Switzerland. Both PhDs will be jointly registered at both institutions (co-tutelle).
