VISUAL – MULTIMODAL ARGUMENTATION & RHETORIC: THEORY AND APPLICATIONS
(provisional title)
Editors: Assimakis Tseronis (University of Amsterdam); Charles Forceville (University of Amsterdam)
Taking up on the momentum that has been gathering in the last two decades around the study of multimodal discourse from an argumentation studies perspective, we have taken the initiative to propose the first edited volume on the subject to the Argumentation in Context book series of John Benjamins Publishing House. The number of papers presented in the last OSSA and ISSA conferences as well as the special issues devoted to the subject by journals such as Argumentation and Advocacy, Argumentation, and Semiotica attest the growing interest and maturing discussions on the theoretical, methodological and analytical issues that the argumentative analysis of non-verbal modes raises. We would like to invite you to submit a proposal for a chapter that fits with the project as described in the outline of the book.
We envisage an edited volume comprising 10 to 12 chapters of a maximal length of 9,000 words, including notes and references. Where applicable, pictures and film stills are to be included (each counting for 250 words). Where appropriate, fair use will be relied upon; where this is not the case, authors are asked to secure copyright permissions themselves.
At this stage we would like to receive a proposal of maximally 500 words, accompanied by some key references and keywords, by 16 January 2015.
Please demonstrate in this proposal that, and how, the envisaged chapter will fit in with the project as described in the outline. Mention also the two (or more) modes that you will investigate, as well as the insights you draw from other related fields outside argumentation studies that are necessary for the analysis you propose. Indicate what type of non-verbal or partly-verbal communicative instances you are going to analyse. Would you also specify at this stage (if known) whether you intend to make use of images, figures, and other printed material that may require copyright and/or special reproduction methods (use of colour, etc.)?
The quality of the proposals sent will be valuable for sharpening the proposal we will submit to John Benjamins and for increasing the coherence of the volume and thereby the contribution that such a publication can make to the field.
Acceptance or rejection of the proposed abstracts will be communicated by the end of January. Upon acceptance of our proposal by John Benjamins we expect the full chapters to be submitted in June 2015. The submitted papers will be reviewed by the editors as well as by a second reviewer. Revised versions of the final chapters are due in January 2016.
Please feel free to contact the editors if you have any further questions and specific ideas that fit the spirit of the book but seem not to be accommodated in the above text.
