Call for Papers, Workshop Proposals and Demonstrations

The field of AI and Law is concerned with:

* the study of legal reasoning using computational methods
* the study of AI and other advanced information technologies, using
law as an example domain
* formal models of norms, normative systems, norm-governed societies
* legal and quasi-legal applications of AI and other advanced
information technologies

The ICAIL conference is the primary international conference
addressing research in Artificial Intelligence and Law, and has been
organized biennially since 1987 under the auspices of the
International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (IAAIL).
ICAIL provides a forum for the presentation and discussion of the
latest research results and practical applications; it fosters
interdisciplinary and international collaboration. The conference
proceedings are published by ACM. The journal Artificial Intelligence
and Law regularly publishes expanded versions of selected ICAIL

Theme: Disturbing Argument


…as in argument that disturbs, contains disturbing words or images, or is about disturbing topics; as in argument that disturbs relationships of power; as in theories and approaches that disturb traditional approaches to  argument. So, “disturbing” is quite polysemous and polyvalent (if not wholeheartedly equivocal).

All submissions about some aspect of argumentation are welcome and encouraged, but preference will be given to those addressing the conference theme.

Submission Process: Please submit electronic versions of completed papers, panel proposals, or extended abstracts to the Conference Program Planner, Catherine H. Submission Format:  The Alta Conference invites completed papers, panel proposals, and paper abstracts written from any of the methodological approaches to argumentation. INTENTIONS: PHILOSOPHICAL AND EMPIRICAL ISSUES

We are proud to announce that the first TOPOI CONFERENCE will be held in Rome in November 2012. This will be the first in a series of conferences, to be held every 2 years, sponsored by Topoi: An International Journal of Philosophy. In analogy with the journal format, each conference will focus on a specific theme (topos), and contributions presented to the conference will later appear in an issue of the journal dedicated to the same topic.

CALL for PAPERS

ASSOCIATION for INFORMAL LOGIC and CRITICAL THINKING [AILACT]

AILACT will convene a session of paper presentations and discussion during the APA Eastern Division Meeting in Atlanta, GA during 27-30 December 2012 to meet in the Marriott Atlanta Marquis.

While we are requesting papers that treat a broad range of topics relating to informal logic and critical thinking, as continuing focal points within the modern argumentation movement, we are especially interested this round to invite papers treating themes relating to the teaching and role/s of critical thinking in academia.

In recent months there has been an elevated discussion about the importance of cultivating critical thinking skills in core and general education curricula. These discussions have responded to some skepticism about teaching higher order critical thinking skills, that somehow doing so undermines authority and core social values. In this connection, we are asking for paper submissions treating such topics as (but not limited to) that might be thought to full (loosely) under the rubric of applied epistemology:

  • Successful or unsuccessful pedagogic strategies for teaching CT skills
  • Whether and in what ways CT skills are discipline specific
  • Successful assessment practices and strategies for teaching CT as an institutional or discipline learning goal
  • How student proficiencies with CT skills are measured
  • What students say about their experiences with CT and the means used to gather information
  • How CT skills and information literacy skills are similar or different; on the relationship between CR skills and IL skills in student learning
  • Whether CT skills should be scaffolded throughout the undergraduate curriculum; how CT skills could effectively be scaffolded throughout the undergraduate curriculum
  • Is teaching CT skills subversive?
  • Other

Again, while we encourage persons to submit papers relating to teaching critical thinking, our call for papers is open to any topic within informal logic and critical thinking.

Papers should have a reading time of 25 minutes.

Proposed New Book: Critical Thinking in Higher Education

Contributions are invited for an edited collection of papers for a book on the topic Critical Thinking in Higher Education,to be edited by Emeritus Professor Ronald Barnett (Institute of Education, University of London), Emeritus Professor Robert H. Ennis (University of Illinois), and Associate Professor Martin Davies (University of Melbourne).

Papers should be submitted by December 31st 2012. Please note that abstracts for papers (400 words maximum) should be sent to the editors for consideration first (see Submission Procedure below).

The book will include a number of previously published papers and original, previously un­published papers. Submissions can be comparative reviews, conceptual studies, empirically-based papers, reflective case studies or offer theoretical contributions. The book will combine new papers, commissioned articles, and excerpts from seminal papers in the field.

The Third International Conference of Logic, Argumentation and Critical Thinking is a new academic effort of our Centre to continue what began in January 2008 and continued in October 2010, the first and second Conferences respectively. Just as with the first two Conferences, which brought together researchers from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain, The Netherlands, United States, and Uruguay, in this third Conference we are not only trying to deepen and update the production of knowledge in the fields that this conference covers, but we are also trying to contribute to a positive valuation of different proposals that develop critical thinking and promote well-reasoned social debate.This Conference, organized by the Centre for the Study of Argumentation and Reasoning (CEAR) of the Faculty of Psychology at Diego Portales University, aims to generate tools, approaches and solutions to apply in those fields in which the uses of reason is fundamental: communication, law, education, etc. We do not have an official theoretical position, choosing instead to value the diversity of angles and proposals. We invite those in the scientific international community working in the topics of the Conference to participate and share in the body of knowledge, experience and current challenges it represents.

Official languages of the Conference: Spanish and English.

Aims

  • To learn about and spread the development and applications of logic, argumentation theory and critical thinking.
  • To share tools and strategies to improve the processes of teaching in the realm of critical thinking.
  • To stimulate academic and institutional exchanges.

Call for papers

The organizing committee invites proposal for papers in logic, informal logic, argumentation theory, rhetoric, critical thinking.

When knowledge-based systems are partners in interactive socio-
technical processes, with incomplete and changing problem descriptions,
effective communication between human and software system is vital.
Explanations exchanged between human agents and software agents may
play a key role in such mixed-initiative problem solving. For
example, explanations may increase the confidence of the user in
specific results or in the system as a whole, by providing evidence of
how the results were derived. AI research has also focused on
how computer systems can themselves use explanations, for example to
